OpenSciEd Facilitator
Micro-credentials
A Pathway to Becoming a Certified OpenSciEd
PL Facilitator
Why Micro-credentials?
OpenSciEd is working hard to remove as many barriers as possible to get great materials to teachers along with the quality of professional learning they deserve. All of our classroom instructional materials and our professional learning materials are free and publicly available, but experiencing the professional learning from a skilled facilitator is critical for success. While we don’t want to be the bottleneck for progress, we do want to make sure that facilitators have the support they need to make the professional learning impactful. These robust micro-credentials offer support for facilitators interested in leading OpenSciEd professional learning to pressure test their understanding of the design of OpenSciEd’s professional learning that builds on what is learned in our facilitator professional learning events.

What is a micro-credential?
A micro-credential is earned by demonstrating competence in a specific skill via a portfolio of evidence created through classroom practice. All micro-credentials are based on a robust, standardized blueprint, grounded in four areas of instructional efficacy research including, cycles of inquiry, job-embedded supports, rigorously calibrated assessment, and portfolio-based learning.

What do these micro-credentials get me?
First and foremost, the work required to earn these microcredentials should deepen your understanding of OpenSciEd’s professional learning and better prepare you to facilitate the Curriculum Launch.
You’ll also get recognition for your work in two ways. The first is you’ll receive each of the three actual micro-credentials from Bloomboard. These are yours forever and you can use them to advertise your accomplishment on social media, in email signatures, on resumes, etc. The second recognition is a digital badge that will come directly from OpenSciEd. Once you have earned your first micro-credential in this series, you’ll also receive an “OpenSciEd-Certified Facilitator” digital badge. This is yours for one year, but will expire unless you earn the 2nd micro-credential within that year. Earning the second micro-credential, Supporting Coherence in OpenSciEd PL, will renew this digital badge for another year. If you earn the third microcredential within that second year (or sooner), you’ll be awarded the “OpenSciEd Expert Facilitator” digital badge. The expert badge is yours to keep without expiration.
This recognition can support you to secure professional learning opportunities as an independent consultant, or potentially in working for one of OpenSciEd’s Certified Professional Learning Providers. They will definitely be valued for those who apply to join the OpenSciEd Facilitator Team, who deliver professional learning directly for OpenSciEd.
Once earned, are these micro-credentials mine forever?

Do I need to be a classroom teacher in order to earn the micro-credentials?
These micro-credentials are designed for facilitators of professional learning and you will need to facilitate at least one professional learning event in order to earn all three, but you do not need access to students. The first two micro-credentials will support you to reflect on and document what you learned in the Curriculum Launch for Facilitators professional learning as you plan to facilitate OpenSciEd professional learning. To earn the third micro-credential, however, you will need to facilitate and video record a whole-group discussion during an OpenSciEd professional learning event that includes adult participants wearing their “student hats” as a part of your submission.
