Investing in Your Own People Pays Off: Pennsbury's First Grow Your Own Graduates
When Pennsbury School District launched its Grow Your Own Teacher Program in 2024, district leaders made a simple bet: some of the best future teachers weren't searching job boards—they were already serving students every day as paraprofessionals.
Two years later, that vision has become reality.
Pennsbury is celebrating its first graduating cohort of educators who earned their teaching credentials while continuing to work in the district they already called home. Their journey—and the impact of the program—is captured in the video below.

Investing in People Already Committed to Students
Rather than relying solely on external hiring, Pennsbury partnered with BloomBoard to create a job-embedded pathway that allowed support staff to earn their teaching credentials while remaining in the classroom.
Throughout the video, one message comes through clearly: these weren't newcomers learning the district's culture. They already knew the students, the families, and the community they wanted to serve.
As one graduate shares:
We already know the district, the people, the climate, and the culture. We have so much background to offer that it makes a lot of sense to pull from your home."
More Than Earning a Degree
The graduates speak candidly about balancing full-time work, coursework, and family responsibilities—and about the confidence they gained along the way.
One participant reflects:
"I finally fit in my Cinderella shoes. I'm doing what I always knew I wanted to do."
Another shares an even more personal moment:
"To say I am a teacher... it's been a dream for 20 years."
Those stories remind us that Grow Your Own programs don't just address staffing challenges—they help talented educators achieve goals they may have thought were out of reach.
A Model for Building Stronger Teacher Pipelines
Pennsbury's first graduating cohort demonstrates what's possible when districts invest in the people already serving their schools.
As one district leader says in the video:
"When a district invests in its own people, I think that signals to all employees that you're a valued member."
That investment doesn't just create new teachers. It builds stronger schools, strengthens retention, and creates career pathways for employees who have already demonstrated their commitment to students.
For districts facing ongoing teacher shortages, Pennsbury's story offers a powerful reminder: Sometimes your next great teacher is already working down the hall.
