Teaching Math through Music

The creative nature of music and the logical nature of math are often thought of as complete opposites of one another. We have all heard that musically-inclined people are "right-brained" while mathematically-inclined people are "left-brained" right? In reality, music is full of math! Help reach your creative students or just bring some new melodies into your classes with this collection of ways to show students the math in the music.

This lesson plan is a great way to include hip-hop in your classroom in a way that conveys a respect for hip-hop as an intelligent art form. This lesson includes a video and activity of hip-hop producers discussing how they use math in producing music and setting up a realistic hip-hop production algebra challenge for students. It also includes additional interactive algebra challenges to extend the lesson with further practice.
